History
Sycamore Christian Preschool was originated by Sycamore Congregational Church’s Japanese Language division, the Nichigobu. It began as a playgroup in May 1995 with two children. The staff was made up of Asayo Kawase, a preschool teacher who was called from Japan and Marume Nakano, the wife of the Nichigobu minister at that time. The playgroup was well received and an application was made for an official preschool license from the State of California. In April 1996, the license was granted, and the school officially began operating as Sycamore Christian Preschool.
From the beginning, the preschool curriculum has placed an emphasis on Japanese language and culture as well as on faith development. A special worship service was held in May 2020 celebrating 25 years of successful operation.
歴史
シカモア幼稚園は、シカモア組合教会附属の幼稚園です。1995年5月に2人の子どもたちのプレイグループからスタートしました。スタッフは、日本から招かれた川瀬朝代先生と当時のシカモア組合教会の日語部牧師の奥様である中野円女先生で構成されていましたが、プレイグループの評判が良く、その年にカリフォルニア州のプリスクールライセンスを申請しました。翌年、1996年4月に認可が下り、正式にSycamore Christian Preschoolとして運営を開始しました。
幼稚園のカリキュラムは当初から、アメリカで生まれ育つ子どもたちが、日本語を話す友だちと出会い、日本の季節の行事や文化を通して、日本を知ってほしいとの願いを持っています。また、キリスト教保育という中で、家族や友だちを愛し、その愛に感謝すること、互いを理解し、共に世界の平和を築いていこうとする気持ちを育んでいきたいと願っています。
2020年5月、創立25周年を迎えました。これまで、シカモアでたくさんの家族との出会いが与えられたことに感謝しつつ、これからの新しい出会いも楽しみにしています。
